January 13 2016

Be The Match® announced today that Joy King has joined the organization as senior vice president of philanthropy and executive director of Be The Match Foundation®. King brings an extensive philanthropic background to the organization, including expertise with major gifts and a passion for development.

Be The Match is a non-profit organization that delivers cures to patients in need of a life-saving marrow or cord blood transplant. The organization operates the national Be The Match Registry®—the world’s largest listing of potential marrow donors and donated cord blood units. Be The Match Foundation raises the funds that help these patients with life-threatening blood cancers.

“We are delighted to welcome Joy to our executive team,” said Jeffrey W. Chell, M.D., chief executive officer of Be The Match. “Her diverse expertise in development, major gifts and operations will strengthen our ability to achieve the Be The Match Foundation vision of helping patients overcome financial barriers to transplant, providing financial support to grow the registry and funding life-saving research.”

King has more than 15 years of experience in development leadership roles. Most recently, she was senior vice president of operations for the Midwest division of the American Cancer Society (ACS). In this role, King was responsible for all Midwest operations for ACS and touched all critical operational components of the organization, including oversight of the Health Systems area.

Previously, King served as vice president of community engagement at ACS where she spearheaded the implementation of a new division strategy and oversaw all community-based fundraising and community-based leadership staff in the largest markets across the division. Prior to that, King spent several years as the regional vice president in Nebraska and the regional executive director for ACS.

“I am thrilled to join Be The Match and work with such an extraordinary foundation and leadership team,” King said. “Be The Match Foundation gives patients a reason to hope and the power to heal, and I look forward to connecting with our financial donors and partners to make this life-saving work possible.”

King was recognized by the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal as a 2015 Women in Business honoree, and was the only leader from the non-profit community to be recognized.

About Be The Match®
For people with life-threatening blood cancers—like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases, a cure exists. Be The Match connects patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. People can contribute to the cure as a member of the Be The Match Registry®, financial contributor or volunteer. Be The Match provides patients and their families one-on-one support, education, and guidance before, during and after transplant.

Be The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), a nonprofit organization that matches patients with donors, educates health care professionals and conducts research through its research program, CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research®), so more lives can be saved. To learn more about the cure, visit BeTheMatch.org or call 1 (800) MARROW-2.
