A life-saving legacy

The Goldberg family

Some people support patients by joining the Be The Match Registry®. Others make financial gifts. If you’re Gary Goldberg, you do both.

When a girl in his community needed a bone marrow transplant over 24 years ago, Gary stepped up to join the registry, hoping to save the girl’s life. Unfortunately, Gary was not a suitable match for the girl. But just a year later, he learned he was a match for someone else—a 12-year-old from Illinois.

Gary went on to donate his bone marrow, ultimately saving the boy’s life. “There is nothing like it. I know how important being a match is and what little effort a healthy person can do to save a life—it’s a no-brainer,” explained Gary.

Now that Gary has saved a life, he knows how good it feels and he wants to save more by helping to connect potential supporters to Be The Match®. “Sitting on a board isn’t what is important to me. I want to connect people to Be The Match—whether it’s to support an event, raise funds, or make an introduction—I want to be a connector,” he said.

And Gary’s life-saving momentum won’t stop there. He and his family are supporting Be The Match with a planned gift. “I was doing some financial planning and we were looking at some of the charities that were important to us and Be The Match was at the top of the list,” Gary said. “It is important to my family to continue to pay it forward and this is a great way to create a living legacy long after I am gone.”

You can create a life-saving legacy like Gary’s. When you make a planned gift, you invest in the future by improving the lives of people with blood cancer and other blood diseases. It’s a simple and easy way to save lives well after you’re gone.
