Rare genetic disease

Alfredo has experienced more pain as a child than some face in a lifetime.

Alfredo’s rare blood disease has greatly impacted his quality of life, but a blood stem cell transplant could change all of that forever.
Here's how you can help:

step 1

Register online.

Answer simple questions about your medical history to make sure you meet health guidelines.

step 2

Wait for test kit.

Receive a cheek swab kit by mail in about 3–7 business days.

step 3

Swab cheek. Return kit.

Your sample will be tested and your genetic type will be added to the Be The Match Registry®.

step 4

Stay committed. Be patient.

Because of the genetic complexity of matching donors to patients, it could be several months or many years before you’re matched to a patient.

step 5

Say "yes" when asked to donate.

Patients and their families are counting on you to keep your promise to donate if needed. You could be someone’s only hope for a cure.

Rare genetic disease
He's been through a lot. He has a low immune system, which makes it easier for him to get viruses and infections.

Alfredo’s mom

Alfredo spent the first three years of his life in and out of hospitals before he was finally diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, IL 10 receptor deficiency. This disease, which affects fewer than 100 people in the United States, leads to a compromised immune system and debilitating pain.

For the past six years, Alfredo and his family have been searching for a blood stem cell donor who matches his Mexican ancestry.

A donor could make a world of difference for Alfredo, giving him a pain-free life and a chance to enjoy his childhood.

Despite his constant pain, Alfredo has a positive spirit and a magnetic personality. He has dreams of being a basketball player or a professional wrestler, but these dreams won’t come to fruition without a blood stem cell transplant. Alfredo believes there is a donor match out there, and it could be you.

About Be The Match®

For people with life-threatening blood cancers—like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases, a cure exists. Be The Match connects patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. People can contribute to the cure as a member of the Be The Match Registry®, financial contributor or volunteer. Be The Match provides patients and their families one-on-one support, education, and guidance before, during and after transplant. Be The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), a nonprofit organization that matches patients with donors, educates health care professionals and conducts research through its research program, CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research®), so more lives can be saved.
