Be The Match® has announced that its Be The One Run fundraising run/walk event will expand to 10 cities in 2012. Columbus, Ohio; Richmond, Va.; San Jose, Calif. and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla will join Atlanta, Ga.; Charlotte, N.C.; Houston, Texas; Long Beach, Calif.; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; and Portland, Ore. for the 2012 series.
These run/walk fundraising events give patients with leukemia, lymphoma and 70 other life-threatening diseases a second chance at life. Every step participants take helps patients receive the marrow transplant they need.
Specific event dates and venue locations will be announced in the next few weeks. Visit BeTheOneRun.org for more information and updates. With a 5K, 1K Fun Run and Tot Trot, Be The One Run is perfect for the entire family and for people of all fitness levels.
Every year, 10,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma and their best or only hope for a cure is a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. Sadly, only half receive the transplant they need.
Too many cannot afford the uninsured costs associated with a marrow transplant, medical complications stand in their way, or they cannot find a matching marrow donor. Most patients (about 70 percent) do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match to find unrelated donors and receive the transplant they need.
Each Be The One Run raises funds to support marrow transplant research, helps patients with uninsured treatment costs and adds more potential marrow donors to Be The Match Registry® - giving more patients hope for a cure.
Be The One Runs bring together marrow donors, marrow transplant recipients, patients searching for a marrow donor, transplant doctors and nurses, family caregivers and a host of other supporters to highlight the need for unrelated marrow transplants.
In 2010, Be The One Run was piloted in Atlanta and Long Beach. In 2011, events took place in six cities. Due to the tremendous participant response, Be The Match decided to expand to 10 cities in 2012. Plans are to expand even more by 2015.
