Despite the continued challenges posed by the pandemic in 2021, Be The Match continued saving lives through cellular therapy. Thanks in large part to generous support from our many corporate, foundation and organizational partners, we were able to rise to the challenge and facilitate 6,649 blood stem cell transplants or other cell therapies.

Our patients and their families were particularly affected by financial hardships brought on by the pandemic. We saw a 91% increase year over year in financial assistance grant requests. In response, we provided a historic $6.1 million in grants to 2,602 patients and their families in 2021—more than any other year in our organization’s history.

We also added more than 300,000 potential blood stem cell donors to the Be The Match Registry® and funded groundbreaking research to identify new and better treatments.

Every day, hundreds of patients rely on Be The Match to find them a genetically matched donor and deliver the cure they desperately need. And we rely on our outstanding community of supporters to help make that mission possible.

About Be The Match
For people with life-threatening blood cancers—like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases, a cure exists. Be The Match connects patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. People can contribute to the cure as a member of the Be The Match Registry, financial contributor or volunteer. Be The Match provides patients and their families one-on-one support, education, and guidance before, during and after transplant.

Be The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program®, a nonprofit organization that matches patients with donors, educates health care professionals and conducts research through its research program, CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research®), so more lives can be saved. To learn more about the cure, visit BeTheMatch.org or call 1 (800) MARROW-2.
