How your unique AANHPI ancestry can save a life

Blood cancers and disorders can be overwhelming and life-changing for many. For members of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, finding a matching donor can also be challenging. Ethnicity plays a very important role in finding a peripheral blood stem cell or bone marrow donor match. Yet your AANHPI ancestry could be the key to a cure for those in need.

AANHPI donors like you can make a difference

Blood stem cell donation is a cure or treatment for over 75 different blood cancers and disorders. For the best transplant success, a patient needs to match a donor with similar genes called human leukocyte antigens (HLAs).

Since HLAs are passed down from each biological parent, a patient's best match is often a donor with a similar ethnic background. Unfortunately, individuals from ethnic groups are often underrepresented on the NMDP RegistrySM. Those who identify as AANHPI can face greater challenges in finding a match, but your distinct heritage could be the key to saving someone's life.

NMDP Donor for All: Transforming transplant access for AANHPI patients

Our NMDPSM Donor for All initiative is breaking down barriers to life-saving transplants for AANHPI patients. By advancing research on the connection between HLA matching and transplant success, Donor for All is expanding options for patients who face challenges finding a fully matched donor. Using innovative treatment protocols with partially matched donors, we’re creating new opportunities for AANHPI patients to receive the cures they need.

Help grow the AANHPI donor list

There are as many reasons for joining the NMDP donor registry as there are donors. Some join on behalf of a patient they know; others resonate with our mission of making sure every patient receives life-saving treatment. Regardless of the reason, all are united in the desire to join the movement and provide cures for those in need.

We hope you’ll consider supporting our mission to increase diversity in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander donor pools.
