No matched sibling donor for myelofibrosis?

Rest easy — alternative donor options perform well

If you have myelofibrosis or love someone who does, you may know that a matched sibling donor is the first choice for allogeneic transplantation (alloHCT). But that option isn’t available for everyone. If that’s you, fear not.

When a matched sibling donor isn’t available, a haploidentical matched donor appears to be a comparable option to unrelated donors according to an observational study using the Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research database conducted by the Chronic Leukemia Working Committee.

The study demonstrated that alternative donor sources had roughly equivalent outcomes. For transplant teams and their patients, this finding indicates that availability of a particular donor choice shouldn’t be a barrier to transplant.

While a matched sibling donor is the number 1 choice for myelofibrosis transplant, from what we know at this time, other donor sources have roughly equivalent survival. This is encouraging news for patients and their transplant teams.
