We are seeking nominations for Affiliated and Independent Director positions on the board of directors. The attached Guidelines for Board Membership briefly describes the duties of a board member for the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match.

Affiliated Directors have either a contractual relationship with the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match or are employed by an entity with a contractual relationship with us. Affiliated Directors include members from a Transplant Center, Donor Center, Apheresis/Collection Center, Cord Blood Bank, and Donor Recruitment Organization.

Independent Directors are individuals who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field and/or have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the purposes for which the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match was formed. Independent Directors include members of the general public; a transplant recipient or a family member; and a donor of bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cells or cord blood.

Candidates should be aware of the time commitments required of a board member for the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match. Each term lasts two years with the possibility of reappointment for two additional terms. A board member could expect to serve up to 10 days per year in addition to travel and the time it takes to review board and committee information in preparation for meetings and conference calls. Candidates must be passionate about the NMDP's goals, values and mission.

Ideal candidates should have some:

  • Board of directors or committee experience
  • Leadership experience
  • Knowledge of health care issues

The committee plans to meet with candidates in mid-June for the final selection process. Successful candidates will be appointed for a two-year term beginning beginning October 1, 2015.

Board members, members of the Council of donor, transplant, Apheresis/collection centers and recruitment groups, and staff members are eligible to nominate a candidate for board appointment. Self-nominations from qualified individuals will also be considered..
