The Daily Herald published a story about Neftali Hernandez, a Des Plaines man in desperate need of an unrelated bone marrow donor to beat aplastic anemia. Hernandez’s Latino heritage is making his search for a matching bone marrow donor more difficult. People often find a suitable matching donor in someone of similar ethnic heritage, but only 10 percent of the 10.5 million people listed on the Be The Match Registry are Latino. Mariana Sgarbi, Illinois recruitment and community development specialist for The Icla da Silva Foundation, explained the need for more diverse donors, noting that Latinos only have a 72 percent likelihood of finding a match.
