Selection of Adult Unrelated HSC Donors: Beyond HLA

This session was presented by the NMDP at the 2010 BMT Tandem Meeting on February 24, 2010, and is provided with permission from the CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research®) , the ASBMTTM (American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation) and the session faculty.

Program Description

HLA matching is the dominant controllable donor-recipient factor determining the outcome of adult unrelated donor hematopoietic cell transplantation. Beyond HLA, selection is often based on donor characteristics such as age, sex, parity, cytomegalovirus (CMV) serostatus, and ABO blood type. In addition, non-HLA donor factors that may influence donor availability can also affect donor selection and the timing of allogeneic transplantation.

This session will:

  • Review published evidence on the role of non-HLA factors as determinates of survival
  • Highlight new data regarding factors that may impact donor availability
  • Describe efforts by the NMDP, and worldwide registries, to increase the availability of adult unrelated HSC donors
