Cord Blood Unit Access and Selection: 2010 and Beyond

This session was presented by the NMDP at the 2011 BMT Tandem Meeting on February 19, 2011, and is provided with permission from the CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research®), the ASBMTTM (American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation) and the session faculty.

Program Description
Umbilical cord blood is being increasingly used as a source of hematopoietic stem cells in allogeneic transplantation in both adults and children. The NMDP Session at the 2011 BMT Tandem Meetings addressed these current topics in cord blood transplantation:

  • Implications of the FDA licensure requirements becoming effective in October 2011
  • Factors in cord blood unit selection, including HLA match, cell dose, and single or double cord transplants
  • Match rates for adult and pediatric patients searching for cord blood units through the NMDP
