What Causes Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GVHD)

GVHD occurs because of genetic differences between the cells of your body and the donated cells. Your new immune system (the graft) might recognize your body's cells (the host) as foreign and attack them.

The immune system uses markers called HLA antigens to recognize which cells belong in your body and which do not.
