Why many would-be bone marrow, blood stem cell donors back out

CNN Medical Team Reporter William Hudson shared results of a recent study that examined why some marrow donors choose not to donate when called as a match for a patient. The study, conducted by University of Pittsburgh professor Galen Switzer and published in the December issue of Blood, found that there are many reasons why people from minority communities opt out of donating more frequently than white donors, including being discouraged by other members of their community and ambivalence about donation. The findings further emphasize the importance of donors being fully educated on their decision to donate and committed to donating if matched with a patient.
