MedFAX highlighted that bone marrow transplants may have advantages over peripheral stem cell transplants, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The article mentioned that the research may fuel a resurgence of interest in bone marrow as the favored graft source. Researchers say the study shows that patients who received cells directly from a donorʼs bone marrow, rather than from peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) taken from the bloodstream, were more likely to have graft failure, but less likely to experience chronic graft-versus host disease (cGVHD). The study was featured as a “top story of the week” in the weekly e-newsletter.
