MedPage Today covered the results of a large prospective, randomized study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed no difference in survival between unrelated bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplant recipients. The study was conducted by the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network, a collaboration between the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and its research arm, Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. The MedPage Today article explained that the research findings may fuel a resurgence of interest in bone marrow as the favored graft source.
