Mixed-race myelodysplastic syndrome patient is searching for a marrow match

Mixed-race girl's quest for marrow match

Black In America (CNN National) By Soledad O’Brien

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien interviewed 11-year-old Imani Cornelius and her family. Imani has been undergoing treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome and is searching for a marrow match. If she doesn’t receive a marrow transplant, Imani’s myelodysplastic syndrome could turn into leukemia. Because Imani is mixed-race, finding a match has been challenging.

During the segment, Soledad O’Brien talked with NMDP repository manager Leila Jones about the urgent need for mixed-race donors. To show her support, Soledad swabbed her cheek and joined the Be The Match Registry on air.
