To advance research and science in these areas, we develop optimal search guidelines and standards, and strive to continually enhance our data management and analysis.
Bioinformatics advances the science of cellular transplantation by optimizing relationships with network partners and sharing research data and standards with physicians, researchers, recruiters and other key decision makers involved in our life-saving mission.
The CIBMTR (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research) collaborates with the global scientific community to advance hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapy research worldwide. A combined research program of the National Marrow Donor Program and the Medical College of Wisconsin, CIBMTR facilitates critical research that has led to increased survival and an enriched quality of life for thousands of patients. Our prospective and observational research is accomplished through scientific and statistical expertise, a large network of transplant centers and a clinical database of 350,000 transplant recipients.
Our repository receives, processes and stores tissue samples from donors and recipients who are in the process of providing or receiving stem cells for transplant. We handle more than 37,000 samples per month from newly recruited registry members. More than 9 million total samples are in storage—as frozen aliquots, filter paper and buccal swabs.
Samples from more than 22,000 donor/recipient pairs are available for use in research studies and more than 1 million stored samples are available for retrospective studies to determine transplant outcomes.
Scientific Services is responsible for understanding immunobiologic aspects of stem cell transplantation data, ensuring the timely acquisition and validation of these data for searching patients and translating the evolving science into actionable policies, practices and services. Through our proprietary matching algorithm, HapLogicSM, and our search strategy services, we share high-quality data and HLA expertise to assist transplant physicians in selecting the best cell source for their patients.
